Is It Illegal to Drive With a Cracked Windshield in Quebec?

A cracked windshield feels like a small thing, right up until a police officer, an insurance adjuster, or a failed inspection turns it into a real problem. So where does Quebec actually draw the line?

Short answer: Yes. In Quebec you can be ticketed for driving with a cracked windshield, and a badly damaged one can even keep your vehicle off the road. It all comes down to one thing: whether the damage blocks your view.

What Quebec law says

The rule starts with section 265 of Quebec’s Highway Safety Code. It requires your windshield and windows to stay clear enough to guarantee good visibility for the driver, and free of anything that reduces that visibility.

The plain language version

Your windshield has to give you a clear view of the road. If a crack, chip, or star sits in the way of that view, your vehicle no longer meets the standard, and an officer can hand you a ticket.

When a chip or crack crosses the line

Not every stone chip is a violation. Four things decide whether your damage is a real problem:

In your line of sight

Damage in the zone you look through while driving is the biggest red flag, and the most dangerous.

Bigger than a coin

A chip or star larger than roughly a one dollar coin usually moves into replacement territory.

Close to the edge

Damage within about 3 cm of the edge of the glass weakens the whole windshield.

Long or spreading

A long crack, or one that grows every week, will not pass and will not wait.

Quebec’s safety standards regulation even puts a number on it: inside the area swept by the wipers, a windshield should not carry intersecting cracks or a chip wider than 12 mm, about the size of a dime.

How much is the fine?

$100 to $200 plus fees. According to CAA-Québec, that is what a windshield crack blocking the driver’s view can cost you. A damaged windshield can also fail a mandatory SAAQ mechanical inspection, so it has to be fixed before the vehicle is road legal again.

Repair or replace?

Usually repairable

  • Smaller than a coin
  • Outside your line of sight
  • A single chip or short crack
  • Only the outer layer of glass

Usually replaced

  • Larger than a one dollar coin
  • In the driver’s field of vision
  • Within 3 cm of the edge
  • In the black ceramic band

More than a ticket, it is a safety part

Your windshield helps the passenger airbag deploy correctly and adds strength to the roof in a rollover, which is why it falls under Transport Canada’s vehicle safety standards. On many vehicles from 2015 onward it also holds the camera for driver assistance features, so after a replacement that camera needs ADAS calibration.

Insurance tip

With comprehensive coverage, also called all perils, CAA-Québec notes that a small repair is often covered with no deductible and no effect on your premium, while a full replacement usually involves your deductible. We bill most Quebec insurers directly.
