Why rear glass shatters all at once
Your windshield is laminated: two layers of glass bonded to a plastic film, which is why it cracks but stays in place. The rear window is different. It is a single sheet of tempered glass, heat treated so that when it fails, it crumbles into small blunt pebbles instead of dangerous shards. Safe by design, but all or nothing.

What to do in the first hour
Wear gloves, sweep the big pieces into a box, and tape clear plastic over the opening from the outside. Skip the household vacuum: tempered pebbles hide deep in trunk carpet and seat rails, and our technicians vacuum all of it out during the replacement anyway.

How the replacement actually works
A rear window replacement is more than dropping in new glass. The technician removes the trim, vacuums broken glass out of the channels, seat folds and trunk, then bonds the new tempered panel with automotive urethane adhesive. The defroster grid and, on many vehicles, the radio antenna are printed into the glass itself, so the new panel comes with them and gets reconnected before the trim goes back on.
