The four most common sunroof problems
Water leaks
Usually a clogged drain tube, not the glass. Water backs up in the tray and finds its way into the cabin.
Stuck or off-track
Debris in the rails, a worn cable, or a panel that has jumped its guides. It jams partway open or closed.
Shattered glass
A rock or temperature stress can break the panel. Tempered glass crumbles all at once, like a rear window.
Worn seal
Rubber hardens with age and Quebec winters. A tired seal whistles on the highway and lets fine dust and moisture in.
A leak is usually a drain problem
Most sunroofs are designed to let a little water past the seal on purpose. That water lands in a tray under the glass and exits through small drain tubes running down the pillars. When those tubes clog with leaves, pollen, or road grit, the tray overflows and the ceiling drips. The seal gets blamed, but the drains are the real culprit in a large share of the leaks we see.
Pour a small cup of water into the open sunroof tray corners. If it does not appear under the car within a minute or two, the drains on that side are likely blocked.
