A cracked windshield and a nagging question: will my insurance pay for it? In Quebec the answer is usually yes, but what you actually pay comes down to your coverage and whether the glass can be repaired or has to be replaced.
Which coverage pays for glass
Quebec insurance has two parts. The public SAAQ plan covers bodily injury on a no fault basis. Damage to your actual vehicle, including the glass, is handled by your private auto policy. Windshield damage falls under the comprehensive or all perils section, not collision, which is why it is treated gently.
According to CAA-Québec, a chip repair is often covered with no deductible and no impact on your premium, while a full replacement usually involves your deductible.
Repair is often free, replacement uses your deductible
Repair
- Often covered at no deductible
- Usually no effect on your premium
- Done in about 30 minutes
Replacement
- Your deductible normally applies
- ADAS cameras add to the cost
- If the damage costs less than your deductible, paying directly may be cheaper
If a repair would cost less than your deductible, it can make sense to pay directly and keep the claim off your file entirely.

We make the claim easy
We work with all the major Quebec insurers, including Desjardins, Intact, belairdirect and Beneva, and we bill many of them directly. A lot of our customers in Dollard-des-Ormeaux pay little or nothing out of pocket. We handle the repair or replacement and any ADAS calibration your vehicle needs.
