Car Break-In? What to Do About a Broken Side Window

You come back to your car and the driver’s window is a hole surrounded by glass pebbles. Break-ins feel personal, and the mess makes everything look worse than it is. The glass part of this problem is actually the easiest one to solve, if you take the steps in the right order.

Short answer: photos first, police report second, insurer third, glass shop fourth. Side windows are tempered glass, so like a rear window they are always replaced, never repaired, and common ones are often available the same day.

The first hour, step by step

1. Photograph everything

The window, the interior, anything disturbed or missing, before you touch or clean a thing. These photos support both the police report and the claim.

2. Police report

In Montreal, theft from a vehicle and mischief under a certain value can be reported online. You get a report number your insurer will ask for.

3. Call your insurer

Give them the report number and photos. Whether the glass is covered depends on your optional coverage, and vandalism claims have their own path.

4. Book the glass

Send us the vehicle details and which window it is. Door glass for common models is usually a quick, single-visit job.

For the police step, Montreal’s SPVM lets you file an online police report for theft from a vehicle or mischief, with conditions listed on the page. For the insurance step, Infoinsurance explains how vandalism claims work and which optional coverages pay for broken glass.

Why the cleanup matters as much as the glass

When a side window breaks, a surprising amount of glass falls inside the door itself, down into the window mechanism. If it stays there, you hear it grinding every time the new window moves, and it can chew at the regulator over time. A proper replacement includes opening the door panel, vacuuming out the channel and the bottom of the door, then installing and aligning the new glass in its tracks through our auto glass replacement service.

Before you drive

Sweep the seat and floor, lay a towel over remaining fragments, and keep the window switch untouched so the mechanism does not grind glass. A plastic film over the opening keeps rain out until your appointment.

Deductible math, one more time

As with any glass claim, compare the replacement price against your deductible before filing. For an older vehicle with a high deductible, paying cash can be simpler and keeps a claim off your file. We are happy to quote it both ways through the quote form so you can decide with real numbers.
